Minneapolis Tragedy: Children Aged 8 and 10 Killed in Catholic School Shooting During Mass

On Wednesday morning (August 27), the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, witnessed one of the most tragic mass shootings in recent years. During a back-to-school Mass at Annunciation Catholic School, a gunman opened fire on students and worshippers, killing two children aged 8 and 10 and injuring 17 others, including 14 children, according to local police.

The Attack

Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that the attacker, identified as Robin Westman, 23, fired dozens of rounds from outside the church, using a rifle, shotgun, and handgun. Witnesses reported that he shot through the church windows while children were praying. After the assault, Westman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Victims and Medical Updates

In addition to the two young victims, 17 people were wounded. Hennepin Healthcare reported that seven children remain in critical condition, ranging from 6 to 14 years old, with four requiring emergency surgery.

Officials Respond

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey delivered an emotional statement:

“Don’t just say this is about ‘thoughts and prayers.’ These kids were literally praying when they were attacked.”

President Donald Trump ordered all U.S. flags at public buildings to be flown at half-staff until sunset as a mark of respect for the victims.

Renewed Gun Control Debate

The shooting reignited discussions over gun control in the United States. So far in 2025, the Gun Violence Archive has recorded 286 mass shootings nationwide. Lawmakers expressed outrage, with Representative Angie Craig saying she was “deeply shocked and saddened,” while others called for stronger measures to prevent gun violence.

Community in Mourning

Bishop Kevin Kenney, who led Mass at the same parish just weeks ago, shared his grief:

“I grew up in this parish. I never imagined I would return here to comfort parents who lost their children.”

Authorities have set up a family support center to provide counseling and assistance to those directly impacted by the tragedy.
